Excerpt – “I have been contemplating my life and how I came to be such a hard woman. We all start out the same – tiny babies- but life is rough sometimes. Mostly, looking back, it was a good life, but when bad events take place (especially in wartimes), it’s like a callous on the bottom of your foot, worn by the hard road or bad shoes or a grain of sand. At first you don’t notice it but then it gets bigger and becomes the center of your consciousness, always there and always growing. I reckoned I had to start at the beginning, not birth, but the year I was 15 years old. It was truly the beginning, although I thought it was the end.”
